A Black woman’s body carried more value in the system of slavery than it does today.
As we look to dismantle the uniquely American racist systems that form the basis of generational trauma, police brutality, mental illness, drug epidemics, obesity, and financial insecurity, we must acknowledge the unique and historic impact on Black women, the true Founding Mothers of this nation.
From its inception, the United States has relied on Black women and their bodies in developing its economy and medical system. From that inherently conflicted relationship, forms of healing and mutual aid emerged within Black communities, traditions that continue today as Black women and their health remains underserved before, during, and after pregnancy. Birthing of a Nation unveils our history of radical self-care through the birth justice movement and the healing arts of Black women in America since 1619.
